HAMISH AND HIS BICYCLE

25.07.10 Falmagne Interclub, dnf. Punctured just after the peleton split up, had to let several groups pass before I could get a wheel, chased for 40k but couldn't get back. Very good legs, a pity it went wrong as it was a very beautiful race. Silver lining; I'm more hungry for the Tour of Vlaams Brabant.

22.07.10 Ninove Pro Kermis 19th. The first ‘two in a row’ since I’ve got going again after being sick. As the next step up in the progression it was a very satisfactory result, especially as it was delivered after escaping in the first lap. Wasn’t really the plan, wanted to warm up a bit but I was near the front and couldn’t help myself. Should have had more confidence and ridden more aggressively in the finale, it would have been better if I’d chosen a better line and not had to brake in the sprint too. Feels like my sprint will start working soon though. Next up Falmagne Interclub and then the Tour of Vlaams Brabant. I’m ready.

21.07.10 G.P Schaal Indeku 13th. The first bit of rain in a week caused a little nervousness and low and behold once we reached a good shiny bit of tarmac there were three crashes in a kilometer, unfortunately bringing down one of my team mates, Kurt who broke his collarbone. I rode steady, planning to make a late surge, which worked out okay, though the lead group was just a bit out of reach in the end.

18.07.10 Drie Zustersteden interclub, 34th. So near but so far. Bit of a flat, weak feeling, which was a hinderance when it really mattered! Escaped with one other from the break with 6k to go but didn't make it decisive. Was still looking good with 2k to go when two team mates crossed to us. I went again with 700m to go and for a moment thought bingo, however I hadn't realised just how close the peleton was and 300m later it all went pear shaped. This was bad for my result but my attacks had enabled my team mate to get on a good wheel and brought him through to a nice second place as everyone wooshed past me. Dissapointing to be down on the necessary power but I anticipated there would be hiccups after the 5 week enforced break. Expect to be better on Wednesday in Hulshout.

13.07.10 Houtem-Vilvoorde pro-kermis, 16th. The strongest I've felt since 2008. However having driven hard in the main move of the day and getting into the winning split, I punctured. Damn, I was sure it was photo time. Managed to chase back and attack again with another rider but by then I was riding for a minor prize. It's not very scientific, I don't have a power meter, however I reckon 'the numbers are good' and are going to get better. I don't want to get carried away though and decided that it's just a little too soon after being sick for riding Temse too. So I'll be riding Drie Zustersteden on Sunday and Dentergem on Monday.

10.07.10 Harlue pro-kermis, 9th. A bit short of where I wanted to be but can't complain given the previous few weeks. In fact I'm very pleased, it's another indication that some very strong performances are on the way. (IMHO) Bit of a warm day (36 deg), death by sunshine and only nine of us survived. Next up, Vilvoorde and Temse Pro Kermis' So till then I'll be in a cool dark room drinking... (water not beer, of course)

07.07.10 Sint Niklaas pro-kermis, 8th. Was hoping things would stay togther a bit so I could ride myself in but when I saw who was going up the road on the first lap I knew that wouldn't be an option. Really enjoyed it, though the good legs took me a bit by surprise, was riding just to stay in front rather than trying to win, doh! Aiming for the podium in Harlue on Saturday, maybe you'll get that promised picture...

04.07.10 Walhain 4th. It was decided that a small race would be a better next step and so a little dissapointed, Aarschot was put to one side. Had a good day though, the steady build up continues nicely. Was fun to be racing rather than just following (hanging on) and good to work out some of the 'finale' nerves. I've got wildcard invites to Sint Niklaas and Harlue. I'm going to attack. ( And then get dropped!!!???!!:p) Hopefully I'll make it onto some podiums/race pictures soon and I'll be able to brighten my site up with them.

01.07.10 As predicted the Nationals was a very short race for me, though after stepping off got some good training done in the Trough of Bowland. I've been able to build up pretty well so far and now I'm healthy things are going in the right direction again. Was great to see my family and get out in the Peak District, a sort of training camp really with a couple of laps of the champs thrown in. Raced in Oetingen yesterday and though it was another dnf I felt much stronger compared with the previous efforts. So no more lumps, no more antibiotics and no more back trouble, just got to get fit now! Next up; Aarschot.

21.06.10 I did another race! Got round this time, though was creaping for the first bit, what with all the wheezin n coughin n all. Even got a little prize (Tielt-Winge 15th) and encouragingly, felt better as things went on. Have started taking anti-b's today for the green lumps (which do a good job of matching my kit!) It's all being reducing the last few days though so I don't expect it will long before it's all cleared up. I don't expect to do many laps of my next race this coming Sunday but never say never.

18.06.10 I did a race! That is, I started, in Keerbergen. Decided not to make any attacks, or big efforts, given the amount of lumps I was still coughing up. Unfortunatley this led to an early finish, though such a gentle reintroduction was maybe no bad thing. It's now a couple of days later and the snot mountain has become just a grassy knoll. Not yet completely out of the woods, though feeling more myself and all being well I'll be racing on sunday. Be good to be back in the prizes?

14.06.10 Well I was feeling a lot better....! Despite taking it easy this nasty little bug has dragged on and on, haven't raced or made any heavy efforts for three weeks. The silver lining is that my body has had an opportunity to adapt to the positional changes I've made (as you can see above my saddle is a LOT lower...:0) So now it's rebuild time, not ideal for the Nationals but there's plenty more racing after that. All being well I'll pin a number on again at Zwijndrecht this Wednesday.

07.06.10 Feeling a lot better, though still quite a bit of flem so only a little steady training till now. Plan to race again at Nieuwrode on the 9th. Hope all the pipes are clear by then.

31.05.10 No news today.           Well sort of, no racing due to loss of voice; I wouldn't be able to ask everyone to slow down and that wouldn't do. Hopefully by weekend my voice will be back and the hacking cough will be gone.

As you can see there are some new additions; me in 2010 kit and some additional logos. There will be more about this soon, including more detail over the help I've had to work through the common bike riders complaint; "back pain". Anyone struggling with that may find it helpful reading. It's only now that I'm seeing significant improvement that I've felt happy to put forward what's working for me. It will be on the diary page.

23&24.05.10 Deux-Acren and Liedekerke Interclub races; 95th and dnf. Looks like a double take of last weekend, which is partly true in terms of prizes (or lack of them). However I was much more competitive, making plenty of attacks on the Sunday, which didn't quite work out. On Monday I was a bit under the weather and had my first dnf of the year - in a group pulled with one lap to go. Again though, the improvement of my previous back trouble continues. Feeling so much more stable and comfortable on the bike, week by week. Despite the lack of form, this progress gives me confidence that its on it's way. Right now I'm feeling a little 'coldy', hope it passes quickly and I'll be racing in Begijendijk on Thursday or Hoksem on Sunday.

14-16.05.10 Triptyque Ardennais, stages; 1, 145th @10'29", 2, 156th @14'59", 3, 74th @43", 4, 105th @2'47". Ouch, that dosen't read well eh? It's no secret that I don't soar like an eagle in the hills but even so it would seem I was a long way back. In fact though it was quite a positive weekend!! Having struggled with back trouble since late March, I've only been training properly the last couple of weeks and had an idea it may be a bit challenging on the bergs. I improved through the race and was able to help my team mates, particularly on the Saturday when I made a good chase to bring back a 25 man break. Above all, apart from a few minor 'adaptation niggles' I have to say that my back was good and stable again, good for the confidence. So now for a recovery week before G.P. Criquilion and G.P. Liedekerke, Sunday and Monday.

09.05.10 Walhain Kermis, 12th. A good fast race, pushed hard and helped my team mate win, beginning to feel significantly stronger. More importantly, it is probably the first race I've done without back trouble since 2008. It's a very encouraging situation, since I've made the changes my stability and feeling on the bike has steadily improved. Once again motor paced home at a good tempo on wide rolling roads, you really feel the drags and little climbs at speed! 350k for the weekend.

08.05.10 Zutendaal Kermis, 5th. Felt a bit rusty, a little out of race rythm and also perhaps due to the hill training during the week. Can't complain though, it's great to be back 'building' again. Did a 'verkenning' of the circuits at the Triptyque Ardennais during the week. After seeing how heavy the loop at Sankt Vith is going to be I decided it was time to get to know the Mur de Huy more intimately. So the next day it was six times up in a row and then eight more climbs to finish off. Got some extras in after Zutendaal, riding home behind the car.

01.05.10 Limburg Provisional Championship, 71st. Made some changes during the week and this race was something of a test, I adopted a cautious approach, though still put in some hard attacking efforts. Provisionally the adjustments seemed to have helped, I didn't experience any significant back pain, got some motor pacing done too, 245k for the day. Hopefully I'll now be able to build up my training properly, within a few weeks I should know if I'm finally close to resolving my back problems. I'll keep you posted.

25.04.10 Grote Prijs Affligem, 16th. Really enjoyed another big day out, 210k by the time I got home. Escaped early and initially felt fresh and strong, however my back still isn't 100% and it began to limit what I was able to do. After 30k we had 4 from our team in a group of about 20, though the gap was not decisive. Given our numerical advantage, I decided to push hard to maintain our lead, giving my team mates a better chance of getting the result we wanted. With the Muur and Bosberg coming up I knew the bunch wouldn't just sit up and with a gap of less than a minute I had to work hard to maintain the group's momentum. Even though by now I was only on 80% power it was certainly easier to suffer when your helping your team. It all worked out well, we cracked the chasers and shed some of our group in the process. Evert went on to win and it makes me happy to think of the moment I set him up for the final move.

Was great to have strong team mates in front, to be able to work together for the win, very refreshing after the last couple of seasons. Now it's a question of raising my level, so it's more core work and stretching to stabilize my SIJ. It's certainly gradually improving, some new exersises, stretches and the advice of a very good physio promise well. Next up, hill training, then a couple of nice races next weekend.

21.04.10 Bever kermis, 81st. Might not look like it but the rest has done me good. Even though it was an easily ridden race and I took it even easier, there was a good feeling in the legs, very supple. Made it a 200k day, with 70k extra after, half of which motor paced.

17.04.10 No races this weekend. I have a nice little race in Bever in the week and a nice bigger race in Affligem on the weekend; I think it’s time to step higher up the podium. Some hill training coming up too, with an eye on the Tryptique Ardennaise.

15.04.10 Vlaams Brabant Provincial Team Time Trial Championship, 3rd @29’. Given we had no practice together, a limited warm up and were fairly unfamiliar with our bikes we had to be pretty happy to get a bronze medal. Was fun despite not feeling great, luckily had strong team mates. ‘Er zat veel meer in.’ Noticed on the podium that our average height as a team was at least 5cm less than the silver and gold riders. Or was that just the effect of the steps?!?

13.04.10 Blood test shows that I have a glandular viral infection. So far it’s been very mild, just discomfort swallowing really but the signs are that I am due a bit of a rest. It could be said that my schedule isn’t very heavy and I’ve only raced since the end of February but you’ve got to listen to your body. I’m needed for a team time trial this week but otherwise it’s some steady riding, stretching, core exercises and generally getting 100% again.

11.04.10 Stage 2, 31st. Despite back twinge and sore throat, determined not to have another s#*t day; my team manager was expecting something from me after last week’s performance. More cobbles and more wind meant a bunch of just 45 at the finish, not a day for sitting at the back! Pretty full on from the start and after Saint Sauveur I was constantly wriggling to relax my back muscles, which didn’t help. Though surprisingly better legs, which certainly did help. Back issue meant that I wasn’t able to fight for a decent prize but pleased to have had a positive day and able to do an hour after to unwind the legs.
Straight to the doctors and osteo for me tomorrow.

10.04.10 Twee Daagse Van De Gaverstreek Stage 1, 135th @~10’. Back on the Belgian cobbles. Not a great day, hit a hole hard early on, which twisted my bars, leading to back trouble. Pity as it had been so good the previous weekend. Also more aware of throat discomfort which had been gradually increasing since just after Florennes.

05.04.10 Stage 3, 20th. So how was I going to defend? My team mates seemed unsure of their ability to help and I didn’t put any pressure on them. At the start I reacted to Lavery’s attack and was surprised to find that I was in position to be in a group of about four riders but decided against it and instead encouraged a small break to form whilst setting a fairly steady tempo. I knew the last 30k would be headwind; it was just a question of keeping the gap reasonable. My plan was to really push hard in the chase from the top of the last climb. I looked for some collaborations and there was certainly sufficient help there but I fell asleep at the crucial moment. With the gap at 2’30” at the top I hesitated and instead of being safe, I was sorry. At the finish I was still fresh, having begun the chase too late and not making the required effort, whereas Philip had ridden all out, with commitment and deserved the win. It was frustrating, as apart from that 5-10k section I had ridden a good race and it would have been a relatively easy win to wrap up.
Still, I really enjoyed racing in Ireland and had a yellow top to show to Gregor on returning to Edinburgh. Big thanks to Ed and Marleen for making me so welcome in Portobello despite the snow. Same too for Owen and family in Bangor and Andy in Derry for all their effort and a good laugh.

04.04.10 Stage 2, 2nd. More up and down and snow too! No real climbs but good wearing roads overlooking Lough Foyle. A day for ‘afwachten’ with a chilly wind and snow melt cooling the legs. Got lucky really, sort of fell off the front at the same time as my team mate Lewis was there, he pulled a hard turn for a couple of hundred meters to set me up for crossing to the break, which I managed, sort of… For about 2k’s that last time up the steppy climb I could barely be described as in the group, in the space of ten minutes it felt as though I breathed in more air than the whole rest of the day. The reward though, was a yellow jersey.

03.04.10 Stage 1, 5th. The constant up and down takes a bit of getting used to compared to Belgium but the first climb seemed to unblock the fuel lines and after that I felt better and better. A cagey race, lots of attacking, chasing and looking at each other, not used to that either. Riding on the left too, bit of a worry at times as there was a lot of traffic but I have to say the race was well organized and strongly supported with out riders. The only thing missing was 'how far to go boards'. Towards the end of the race I was busy asking the motorbike marshal what was left to do and he pointed ahead to some flags just coming into sight round a gradual bend. It was then that I noticed the wheel in front of me was getting quickly further away! Bit of local knowledge paid off there.

02.04.10 Tour of the North Prologue, 21st. The rain welcomed me to my first time in ‘the North’. It was also the first race in ‘UK & Ireland’, besides Nationals and Tours of Ireland/Britain, since the Ras in 2003. Good to meet my ‘Velo Ecosse’ team mates, thanks to Gregor for the opportunity and support. Though I don’t look too thankful just coming up to the Stormont, Storm-mount would be an apt description, it was lashing down. Struggled to go fast, seemed to blow half way up the hill and yet two minutes later was hardly out of breath, need to be better than that tomorrow.

28.03.10 Florennes kermis, 29th. A mucky, damp and surprisingly hard fought race. Felt a bit blocked but encouragingly much better whilst motor paced training afterwards. Good sign.

27.03.10 Pellenberg kermis, 7th. Three team mates in a group of six up the road made for a relaxing race, bit of a benefit do for our sponsor really. Won the bunch sprint, not something I normally do, don’t know what came over me!

26.03.10 A week of fairly steady training, lots of massage, stretching and core exersises and now I´m hopefully ready for action again this weekend, Pellenberg on Saturday and Florennes Sunday. With luck everything will be back on track for my trip to The Tour of the North next weekend where I will be guesting with Velo Ecosse.

A first picture of me in my new kit. If only ´d noticed that the team issue socks I´d put on were different lenghts!

21.03.10 Challenge De Hesbaye, 62nd. After strong performances and otherwise good preparation, some overzealous DIY (I´ve just moved house) was my undoing. Or at least a contributing factor. Being my first race with my new team I was keen to impress but instead a back twinge took 20% of my power leaving me a spectator. Frustrating but the good news is my team mate won, if only I could have contributed significantly.

14.03.10 Runkelen kermis, 4th. First race in my new colours. This time no carage but miscalculated in the last two kilometers when I had a very good chance to win. At least it leaves me really hungry for my first interclub, Challenge de Hesbaye on the 21st. This continues a very good start to the season and promises well for what comes. Should have time later this week to explain the changes to my winter preparation in a diary update. So far the signs are that it's really going to pay off. Can't wait for the next number pinning (you should see how many pins I use!)

13.03.10 Granglise Kermis 2nd. Ouch! A very strange end to the race. Came into the finish in a group of three, I started the sprint during which the French rider fell. So I rolled across the line 20 metres ahead of the remaining rider but he was awarded the win. The Frenchman and myself were awarded the other podium spots. I didn't put my arms up, as I'd just seen a very heavy fall, I think a spectator was also quite badly hurt. For me it was an 'accident de course', I was taking a tight but straight line through the corner, 150m to go, I wasn't sure where he was and he was trying to squeeze through a gap that wasn't there.

12.03.10 Have signed with a new team! Van Goethem-Prorace; www.wielersportteam.be

Details including upcoming programme and pictures of new kit and bike, to follow.

10.03.10 Wanzele Pro-Kermis, 50th. Received a wild card invitation to do this race. Was a fairly team controlled non-event really. Made one hard attack two laps to go, which caused the group to split but only for a few k's. The counter attack of a handful of riders did succeed but I wasn't able to go with it. Finished in the middle of the bunch.

Still, did manage to stand still for a moment in the sunshine for a picture. Thanks to Bio-Racer for the support whilst riding unattached.

Wonky glasses make me look like Dame Edna Everage. Sort of.

07.03.10 Heide-Linter Kermis, 29th, nearly 200 riders again and even colder! Took it steady with achey knees from yesterday. Have been riding a new saddle this last week which has 'softned', (have lifted it since) so didn't want to put too much pressure on. just had bit of a blast at the end to get a wee prize.

06.03.10 Molenbeek-Wersbeek kermis, 4th. Solid start despite wearing three undervests and two pairs of armwarmers, it's not really my weather when all the puddles are frozen!

03.03.10 In Belgium and feeling good. Have done a couple of races, 27.2, Saint-Severin, 12th, not bad from 200 very twitchy riders. 28.2 Oud Heverlee, was in front group of twelve or so but the race was stopped due to VERY bad wether conditions, I've never had hot aches in my hands like that before! I'm currently riding as an individual for the province of Vlaams Brabant, though anticipate being with a new team shortly.

I'll be making a diary entry to explain what I've been up to and whats coming up, have a look soon.

02.11.09 Training again! Though for now it's pretty steady, the only thing that I've been consistently doing till now is the core muscle training, which seems to be working...

I've put up a summary of the better results from this year on the profile page, take a look.

11.10.09 Boom Kermis, 28th, LAST RACE! The back trouble that has blighted the whole season did the same again today. Glad the racing is done, had enough of riding with one arm tied behind my back. Time for a rest and to get to work on my core. There'll be a diary update soon.

09.10.09 Zwevezele Pro-Kermis, 10th. Good but not top. Will probably be like 10 men for the last two races, but the form's come just too late for this one. Was a fun race though, hard fought in the wind, tough to stay forward and keep going with 'likely moves'. Tried a suprise jump with 300m left up a drag into the wind, it was neither a suprise nor a good idea and when you're struggling it dosen't take long for them all to come round you. Nearly stopped at 100m to go!

Received a nice pic from the race in Oudenburg; demonstrates well my handlebar chewing ability.

07.10.09 Zele Pro-Kermis, 46th, a little better than sunday but still doing puffing billy impressions.

04.10.09 Rumst Kermis, 2nd. Heavy legs, only felt good the last 10k, battled round the whole race and got a bit lucky at the end, pretty much the opposite of what normally happens! The only thing that was working well was crossing 50-100m gaps, hopefully its a sign of form coming through just in time.

30.09.09 Berlare Pro Kermis, DNF. Was in peleton which was stopped with a lap to go. Felt good to start but then noticed i was loosing a metre out of the corners and kept having to wipe my runny nose on my arm! It's 'kantje boordje', balancing on a knife edge between getting sick and coming into top shape.

27.09.09 Gooik Interclub, 51st, the last stage of my little 'Ronde van Belgie'. Was in the main break of the day, strong as ever and with more nerve could have had good position in the eventual bunch sprint, it's frustrating to come over the line fresh. 1150 kilometres in the previous nine days. Couple of days easy now before Berlare....

26.09.09 Tienen Pro-Kermis, 10th, caught out by a counter attack after a big effort of my own, probably never felt so consistently good on the bike, race after race, and had so little to show for it. Am certain the work will pay dividends very soon, it has to, I've only 10 races left!

24.09.09 Stekene Pro-Kermis, ~70th, legs seem to be getting better and better, just missed break again!

22.09.09 Vichte Pro-Kermis, DNF, missed crazy split, legs still very good so stopped 30k to go as there were no prizes to win.

21.09.09 Viane Pro-Kermis, ~ 80th, was probably 30th in bunch sprint 500m to go then had to nearly stop to JUST avoid big crash, phew!!

19.09.09 Dilbeek Kermis, 51st more of a training effort ready for the upcoming races.

15.09.09 Desselgem Pro-Kermis, 19th. Hesitated at the moment when there was a 50m gap that needed a determined effort to put me in the front group. Had an okay day out though, good to ride with stronger riders, can feel it bringing me on. A really busy period of racing the next two weeks, determined to make it a good one, so now for a bit of recuperation, some speed work and a big deep breath...

12.09.09 Nieuwekerken-Waas Interclub, 4th. This time was TOO awake, did too much in finale. Felt extremely good on the bike, rode 230k in total and on getting back to Harry's felt as though I'd only just set off.

10.09.09 Izegem pro kermis, 72nd, felt very good, good leg speed and almost got into position to make a sprint, encouraging signs. After a testing couple of weeks, some good training, recuperation and recent motor pace sessions have sharpened me up, confident of a good day on Saturday in Nieuwekerken.

06.09.09 Molenbeek-Wersbeek kermis, 29th, attacked or chased the whole race, good work out.

05.09.09 Zutendaal kermis, DNF, punctured after 20k.

03.09.09 Kortemark pro kermis, DNF. Struggled to hold bars with right hand due to rough roads and a bit of rain.

29.08.09 Sint Truiden - Bousalle, 15th, point to point, long straight roads, wind, climbs, like a proper race in minature. Was fun, would have been more so, had I not been a bit tired and lazy. Another 200k day, now its time to spin my legs off behind Jef's motor, not TOO heavy, want to be top for Kortemark. Unfortunatley have had to pass on Geraardsbergen, my hand/wrist still not great for cobbles.

27.08.09 Baardegem kermis, 27th, pas de stress! Fun day out and pleased to have good legs, with extras clocked 380k for the two days. Another bash on Saturday (all being well; more finale practice) and then a couple of days to get good and loose for Geraardsbergen amd Kortemark.

26.08.09 Memorial Danny Jonckheere, Oudenburg, 4th. Had a very good chance to take a nice win and didn't, £$%^!!! Note to self; in the last 5k - WAKE UP!

23.08.09 Haaltert kermis 3rd, snapped a spoke 8k to go and sprinting etc. was out of the window. One of the advantages of being away in a group of three from half race and having a good gap is at least third place is safe! Was a good day out; did the race and 80k on top. Good practice too, was away with a Lithouwer and a Kazakh, they may have each worn different kit but it was certainly them versus me, was fun to cover their one-two attacks. Got a new spoke in, hope I'm as well recuperated as the wheel for tomorrow in Memorial Danny Jonckheere.

Nice pic.. in Vivegnis

20.08.09 Mere Pro-kermis, 23rd. Another red hot day! Very happy with my ability to cross 15 second gaps alone, not normally my forte, it's a good sign. A puncture on the moment that the race was decided meant it was time for some training efforts, though seemed to go flat after half race, perhaps a bit fatigued. Going to take it steady the next few days. Probably just the one race this weekend in Haaltert before Memorial Danny Jonckheere next week.

18.08.09 Wervik Interclub 109th, once I realised it wasn't going to be my day took it steady with an eye on Mere, thursday. Kemmelberg cobbles and knackered concrete roads made my wrist *%£&! sore!

15.08.09 Tielt-Winge kermis 1st, you wait for ages and then two come along at once... Planned to wait for a sprint from the break but the little climb 2 kilometres before the finish was to good an opportunity to miss. Nice to perform 'voor eigen publiek'.

11.08.09 Heusden Pro-kermis 80th? in the peleton. Felt good at times despite the sensation of having a light cold.

09.08.09 Vivegnis kermis 1st, nice hilly race, good 'finale' practice as pictured below in the sprint for the line. Aim to make it the first of several wins over the next weeks.

Bit of catching up to do, it's been a busy week or so, moving house and racing.

06.08.09 Halen kermis, 3rd. Paid for intense motor-pace training a couple of days before, up and down with a sprint at the top of each hill. Will pay dividends for next week...

02.08.09 Buggenhout Pro-Kermis, 18th. Great legs, still a little hampered by shoulder, rib and wrist. I suppose in the circumstances I should be content however it was a good opportunity that I didn't take; I don't like 'losing'!

30.07.09 Internatie Reningelst, 12th. Very windy, my prediction before the start that only 20 riders would finish came true. A dicky tummy took my edge off and not 100% recovered from previous efforts. Stayed upright though when many didn't; saw quite a few climbing out of ditches!

27.07.09 Westrozebeke Pro-kermis, 41st. Day six, despite the rain felt great the first 50k, seemed to miss-time all my attacks and when the break went the lights went out. Emergency feast time! Emptied my pockets, not on to the road of course but into my mouth. Did the trick, still had dead legs but was able to scuttle along the gutter for another 100k to finish. All in all a good few days of conditioning after my crash a couple of weeks ago. Very surprised how strong I felt, perhaps the enforced rest did me some good? Next up, Internatie Reningelst, 30.07, Buggenhout Pro-Kermis, 02.08.

Found a picture of me from Schaal Schoeters....

22-26.07.09 Ronde van Vlaams Brabant, stage by stage, 25th, 74th, 141st, 6th, 138th. Much better than expected, though a bit uncomfortable at times, especially over the cobbles! Took it really easy in the time trial on a standard bike and went for it on the day after, trouble was I couldn't get enough force through the bars to make a sprint but felt very good when it came to forcing the pace. Needed some forcing too, don't think I've ever ridden to the line with such a negative and disorganised break. Big thanks to Annick, she went beyond the call of duty in getting my shoulder and upper back in order throughout. I think her wrists must have been almost as sore as mine after five days.

21.07.09 Going to race again. Could have said 'time to race again' but I'm not sure it is! Still pretty sore but have been able to keep fit and feel straight enough on the bike. The Ronde van Vlaams Brabant starts tomorrow and goes till Sunday. All being well I'll ride it out and judging by the my effort behind the motorbike the other day, will be good again soon enough.

06.07.09 Schaal Schoeters, Beveren. This time didn't manage to avoid the bodies flying everywhere, riders really need to look where they're going!!! No where for me to go except up in the air and down on my head and shoulders. Really thought I'd finally broken something but thankfully not, just a lot of swelling and very friendly, efficient nurses. The stitches were done in 30 seconds flat. Will be 12/14 days before the next race, ice and home trainer for me!

04.07.09 Melle kermis, 12th. Just avoided a crash 3km from the finish that split the front group, pity but glad not to be on the floor. Also a bit blocked in the lower back again, this continuing background problem requires a solution; so am now working with Tom Dupree from 'Move to Cure'. In the meantime some manipulation and massage and I'm all set for Monday.

28.06.09 GB National Championships, 11th. Not great first 50k, battled over the tumble but in a moment of weakness passed up chance to get back to the group with Ben Swift. Was very good once on the circuits, though the time had already been lost and we didn't have the fire power behind to catch anyone other than those who were struggling in front. Results are heading in the right direction though, very determined to make the most of the coming month's races. This weekend it's a couple of amateur kermis' then a series of pro-kermis and interclubs; Melle, Pittem, Willebroek, Vilvoorde. It's cracking the flags out too, just the way I like it!

Thanks to Martin and Ed for bottles and pic's. Speaking of bottles and heat, I did six and a quater hours in the Ardennes on Wednesday and drank ten of them!

On the rivet, or a stroll in the park? Abergavenny 2009.

23.06.09 Ruddervoorde Pro-kermis, 18th. Great legs but gambled my chances away in last lap, resolved not to do that again, happy with the feeling though.

21.06.09 Lede Pro-kermis, 33rd. After feeling good in training all week, surprisingly heavy legged, battled round to finish.

16.06.09 Chamionship of the Waasland, Interclub in Belsele. 6th. After plenty of ice, massage, stretching and taping I'm glad to say had no real problems. Took it steady first 80k to be sure, the sensation in the legs and power in the races is steadily improving week by week, roll on Lede and Ruddervoorde pro-kermis'.

On the attack or hanging on??!!??

13.06.09 Moorsele Interclub, DNF. That isn't the whole story though. Felt very good and was up the road from the start, the first 100k in a group of twenty. When we were caught I clipped away again with 8 others for another 10k. Caught and attacked again escaping with one other for 30k. We had a minute and a group of five bridged across, it was at this point that I started with a muscle strain and shortly after stopped with 10k to go, a pity but overall very encouraging.

06.06.09 Ghoy amateur kermis, finished last man. Bit of a cold has put paid to plans for this weekend, make sure to be healthy and be good again in a week??

02.06.09 Gullegem Pro Kermis, DNF. Improving it may be but I'm not yet good enough for another tough day. Could probably have thrashed round to finish but my judgement was that due to the previous months problems I may have over-reached in hanging on, so pulled the pin instead. All being well it's the same plan through the week and then go for three good results next weekend. Provisionaly that will be in Ghoy 06.06, Gits 07.06, Kester 08.06. Three kermis', would be good to be on the top step a couple of times.

01.06.09 Liedekerke Interclub, 16th. Another good day out in the sun. Maybe it was that which put me to sleep so that I missed the move which went early. Made good effort trying to get back to them later in the race. Condition is quickly improving,

31.05.09 G.P. Etienne de Wilde Interclub, 3rd. Not quite cassa, cassa, cassa but still nice to get some flowers, Peter was pleased too.

Next races; 31.5 G.P. Etienne de Wilde Interclub, 1.6 Liedekerke Interclub, 2.6 Gullegem Pro-Kermis

24.05.09 G.P. Claud Criquillion 21st. Felt even better despite previous days' efforts. Was in numerous attacks from the front group but missed the final selection, was a bit outnumbered and should have ridden more cannily. Had to jam on the breaks due to a rider 'bollarding' 50m before line which lost me 5 spots. Have 650k from the previous 4 days so now's time for a little rest, some motor pacing, osteopathy, massage, core exersises and then next weekend cassa, cassa, cassa!?!

23.05.09 Heist-op-den-berg Pro-kermis, 125th in peleton sprint. Better again, best feeling of year so far, was able to finally make some attacks.

21.05.09 G.P. Raymond Impanis, 115th in peleton. Much better than the previous few days, still with similar problems for first 40k

17.05.09 Walhain, 25th, continuing back issues, seemed to cause my left leg to block completely, not convenient when there's 50kmph wind and narrow roads! Had to wait for chasing group, flet much better and made a good training pusruit. Despite these further problems there's room for optimism, honest!!

13.05.09 Puivelde Pro Kermis, 81st in peleton. Was good for first 100km then started with back pain, after which couldn't press on. Struggled to get from the car to the house afterwards.

10.05.09 Willebringen, 3rd

09.05.09 Mariakerke-Bornem, 26th in bunch sprint.

04.05.09 Sinaai, 60th

03.05.09 Ardooie, 20th

01.05.09 Hoboken, UCI 1.2 Belgium, 57th in peleton bunch sprint, again suprisingly good feeling.

29.04.09 Laarne, ~60th in peleton, better than expected given how rough I'd felt the previuos two weeks.

19.04.09 Rund um Duren, UCI 1.2 Germany, dnf, full of a cold, only went to sign and enable the team to start, real pity it's a very nice race.

Coming up, this weekend, 11/12.04, Twee Daagse van de Gaverstreek and Aarschot Pro race on monday 13.04

05.04.09 Tourinnes St.Lambert, ~70th in peleton from 152 starters

04.04.09 Ottergem, 66th in peleton from 252 starters

01.04.09 Brugge St. Kruis, ~100th in peleton from 240 starters

29.03.09 Florennes, 15th from 104 starters

28.03.09 Chaumont-Gistoux, 19th from 108 starters

22.03.09 Challenge de Hesbaye - Trognee, Interclub Belgium, 49th. Continuing problems with pelvis made this a difficult race, it was already hard enough, with wind and tough little climbs meaning only about 50 finishers from the 190 starters. Frustrating too, as had I not made all my attacks in slow motion I could well have had a good result. Going to keep working at it.

15.03.09 Omloop het Waasland, UCI 1.2 Belgium, 119th

11.03.09 Wanzele Prof Kermis, Belgium DNF

08.03.09 Lillers, UCI 1.2 France DNF crash at 20 kilometres

07.03.09 Result/uitslaag Vlaamse Pijl, UCI 1.2 Belgium, 60th

01.03.09 Race result; Oud Heverlee, Belgium, 9th

28.01.09 Race result; Beverbeek Classic, UCI 1.2 Belgium, 50th

30.01.09 Finally some news!

I'm pleased to say that I have signed with Yawadoo Mobile-Colba-ABM for 2009. My team has a training camp in Spain this week so there will be more info and pictures very soon, including the new kit. Have a look at my diary page too, that's where I'll put most of the stuff.

23.10.08 No news yet, any minute now perhaps?

Well maybe this week anyway, signing with a team for 2009?
